12 irregular migrants pushed back by Greece found frozen to death.  Suleyman Soylu, said in a Twitter post written in English: “Twelve of the 22 migrants pushed back by Greek Border Units, stripped off from their clothes and shoes, have frozen to death.”

Turkish authorities on Thursday found seven more dead bodies near Turkey’s border with Greece, raising to 19 the number of migrants who have frozen to death at the frontier. Turkey has blamed Greece for the deaths, accusing Greek border guards of illegally pushing the migrants back over the frontier. Greece has strongly rejected the accusation.

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has officially launched infringement proceedings against Turkey because of its failure to release Osman Kavala despite a European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) judgment.

Turkey's daily Covid cases exceed 100,000 for the first time. With the spread of the Omicron variant, daily new cases have drastically increased in the country since late December and surpassed the 100,000 mark for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Turkey for January 2022. According to the TurkStat, the CPI, or the consumer inflation rate, increased by 11.10 percent when compared to the previous month (December 2021), by 48.69 percent when compared to last January and by 22.58 percent when compared to the twelve months moving averages. Turkey’s inflation rate hit 36.1% in December, the highest since the beginning of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s 19-year rule.

Workers of Turkish cargo company Yurtici Kargo and Banabi, the grocery branch of online food delivery platform Yemeksepeti, went on strike on Feb. 1 in the face of inadequate wage rises and poor working conditions. Delivery and warehouse workers working in Yemeksepeti Banabi stopped deliveries on Feb. 1, demanding an increase in their wages and a guarantee of their unionization rights.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that he and his spouse Emine Erdogan have tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

An attack was carried out against the Atatürk Statue in Turkey's Black Sea province of Samsun. Following the attack, citizens started keeping a vigil in front of the statue.  The vigil continued till the early morning hours.

Turkish security forces killed 22 terrorists of the PKK terrorist group's Syrian branch, the YPG, in northern Syria. The terrorists were targeted while preparing to carry out attacks in the Operation Peace Spring and Euphrates Shield zones, the Defense Ministry said on Twitter on Sunday.

Turkey’s population has topped 84.5 million, according to TurkStat. According to TurkStat, the population residing in Turkey increased by 1 million 65 thousand 911 people compared to the previous year, and reached 84 million 680 thousand 273 people as of December 31, 2021.

Following the snowfall that began on February 3 and continued incessantly for 11 hours, Turkey's Aegean province of Isparta has been faced with a power cut. After heavy snowfall in Isparta, electricity has not been provided to homes and workplaces for more than 40 hours.
